I have a wieght training background and can currently bench 140 kg for 5 reps and Squat 190 for the same.

Would 16kg kettlebell be heavy enough or should I go heavier. Or is the training so different that the 16 is the way to go???

I just do not wish to purchase a 16 and find that after a few weeks I will need a 24.

I'd start with a 20kg

The kettlebell exercises are very different to traditional weights and is you go too heavy then you may have trouble learning some of the exercises.

You won't regret having a lighter KB around for learning new drills, stretching drills, H2H stuff etc. Just this morning I was using an 8kg for some stuff (normally use 32s)

Due deference to Don, but it depends on your goals, Jas.

You've got two big power lifts, there, and you'd have the foundational strength to go straight to work with the 32 kg bell for some lifts.

But for others, particularly repetion ballistics, you'd be wiser to start with a 24 kg, 16 or maybe a 20, as Don suggested.

A key point of difference with kettlebell athletics is the strength-endurance quality fostered by repetition snatch and cj's. If that's what you want to improve then starting light would be wise.

I, myself, no longer lift the 16 kg but I do take it down to the park and throw it, which provides a different ( again ) benefit.
