Under the auspices of Girevoy Sport Australia Association http://taskettlebellers.tripod.com/gire ... australia/ (http://taskettlebellers.tripod.com/girevoysportaustralia/), a kettlebell lifting competition will be held on the weekend of March 29-30 , 2008. The starting time and day are arbitrary; check with your local organiser.

The events to be contested are :

1. Men’s Traditional Biathlon (2 kb jerk , later followed by snatch)
2. Women’s Biathlon (1 kb snatch, later followed by 1 kb jerk)
3. Snatch only
4. Long cycle clean and jerk (1 kb men and women ; 2 kb men only)

Additionally, an extra event is :

5. "Chair" press with 1 or 2 kettlebells , best held after the above have been run. Clean once , sit on bench (not chair) and press repeatedly with full lockout. One hand switch allowed with the 1 kb event – to switch you drop and re-clean the bell to the opposite side. The bell must not rest on the shoulder between reps , it sits in the rack position that is used for kb jerks. Do not contest this event unless you have prepared for it as it requires excellent core stability and good shoulder strength.

The rules are outlined in the NAKF rules section – link here - http://cmuberti.googlepages.com/rules
and should be read now, so as not to get an unpleasant surprise on the day! If you are hosting an event with multiple competitors please read the "hosting an event" section, and do your best to follow the advice . Though a platform is not strictly necessary , the floor must be firm and level , and some sort of floor protection is wise (plywood , rubber mat, extra carpet) if you are in someone else's gym/hall as the bells can go flying ; also stay well away from mirrors and other equipment.

Please note the major federations have recently adopted the “no rest in the hang “ rule for some events , HOWEVER as the aim in Australia is to introduce competition in a general fashion (i.e. without intimidation) for the purposes of THIS competition , rest in the hang position will be allowed in both long cycle and snatch events. Also note that the arm(s) and bell(s) should not touch the body during hanging. And to clarify , there is no resting of the bell on the chest/shoulder during snatches.

The usual girevoy sport rules apply in that the competitor is allowed a single hand switch and the event is terminated if before the 10 minute time limit is achieved , he/she drops the bell or places it on the ground before the second hand switch (unless you are one armed or have an arm disability which precludes a hand switch). For additional nuances please consult the rules in the link above, ASAP.

Please choose event(s) carefully ; this is a gruelling sport and it is better to start conservatively. For most this means one arm events , and kettlebells of appropriate (not too heavy yet not too light) weight. For women I would expect 12 or 16kg to be used and men , 16 or 24kg. It is unwise to use the 32kg unless one has had several months high repetition training and is injury free. Of course , you can use different weights for different events e.g. 24kg snatch and 2x16 jerk – however the "traditional" competition event means you must use kettlebells of a single weight.

If you wish to compete and/or host an event please contact me at least a week beforehand ( i.e. earlier than 22nd March) to allow paperwork to be organised.

Bear in mind this is an “open competition for Australian residents , there are no prizes and no official rankings will be given. Whilst there are no entry fees, all competitors will be required to sign a waiver to be forwarded to me with the final result. We are still in the process of preparing this waiver , a necessity of modern “risk-averse’ life.

Note if you are sick or injured on the day of competition the organiser has the right to refuse competition , in the interests of your safety whilst recognising the responsibilities of the organising Association. I shall be available by phone to adjudicate if necessary.

Event organisers should be properly organised well ahead of schedule and consider appointing a photographer to record still +/- moving images of the event. These are invaluable training tools .

Right now is time to commit , get organised and focus that training (3-4 days a week , depending upon experience/fitness level ) Only 4 full weeks until you enter the pre-comp tapering week. Sorry about the short notice, but gireviks get used to being prepared for anything life can throw at them ! I promise the next event will be announced well ahead of schedule and note you will be required to register as an Association member to gain entry to that (next) event.

Earlier today Girevoy sport came to the sleepy little hollow of Brunswick Junction

The goal of both myself and aussie was to just to complete the 10 minutes

Snatch with 16

Austin = L 59 / R 78 putting the bell down at 8:45
Jamie = 76 L/R putting the bell down at 10:00

Austin not happy with time, Jamie not happy with rep count

2 x 16 LCC&J

Austin was determined to hold out for the 10 minutes and he did a fantastic job completing 67 reps in 10 minutes. The last time we tested, 6 weeks ago, he managed 16 reps so thats an awesome improvement

Jamie unable to compete due to shoulder popping out during snatch

For different reasons we both had interrupted preparations so both rapt to complete 10 minutes and now knowing that we can do it...onwards and upwards

Congratulations to everyone who had a go at this!

We had around 12 participating at the City Baths. Will put the numbers up when I get a chance.

I got 48/48 snatches with the 16kg and made the full 10 mins, so I was rapt (I weighed in at 64.5kg ont the digital scales at work).

Ann-Michel, the only other girl using the 16kg, got an amazing 130 snatches (not sure what the breakdown was for each hand) and also made it to the end of the 10 mins (think Ann-Michel is aroun 75kg - sorry if I got it wrong Ann-Michel! It'll be recitified when full results are posted).

Well done to all competitors , from Mission Control :D

What a great turnout considering the complete novelty of this sport. It can & it will get bigger & better.

Keep the fire lit everybody! And turn the blowtorch on the others

Haha. Tim High Pants indeed. Dr Phil would say "somewhere, someone is missing a village idiot".

And as for me, I was inspired by the Russian girls to wear short shorts. Not something I usually do, but I was definitely cooler than usual!

Paul, your technique is so consistent! I was watching a bit of video of myself towards the end of the 10 mins and I was twisting my torso when resting on the right side, and my right arm wasn't quite locking out. The right side is where I carry all my injuries, so I will have to really concentrate on technique on that side.
