Paul just wondering whether the breathing pattern for heavy GS pressing is the same as the jerk, i.e breathing in as the bell rises over head.... or do you revert to a 'power breathing' and breath out when grinding through the press. Im just starting to work in strict pressing again and would like to get it right from the beginning. heavy for me being the 40/48 and hopefully a 56/globe DB when the bank balances allows !! cheers

The GS press is about generating a very rapid power wave which accelerates the bell - and will take you past the "sticking point" without excessive triceps activation. Sharply exhale just before you begin the press - inhalation will occur naturally. If you practise with a 16kg and press rapidly for a minute (1 rep every 1-2secs) without using your legs you will have to adopt this pattern...or get very anaerobic!

Later on you will see this is how to get many more reps with heavier bells than with slow grinds. In general , GS is not about going red in the face when lifting!

It does take quite a bit of practise to adopt the requisite breathing patterns, moreso if you have "grown up" with power breathing.

btw the heavyweight GS guys rarely train with bells over 45-48kg. But at a pinch , they can lift them easily. Power from the legs and shoulder stability from thousands of reps with 32s. You can get a lot more OH reps than say with TGUs and grinding presses.
