Can anyone(esp Uncle) comment on this to the side style snatching? I've noticed Denisov doing it before & it seems to work...

Hi Antoni
This is just GS style snatching, The twist around the forarm at the top is called the cork screw. This is the standard technique used in the snatch part of the GS comp. It is very effective as the grip stress is reduced, forarms get to rest. If you are used to flipping the bell over it simply is just not effective in lasting the distance. The cork screw motion is just one part of the lift in GS. Notice the girevek's legs as well as she catches, the whole GS technique is aimed at body ergonomics so that you can last the 10 or more minutes. Teh cork screw is just one more method of letting the bell down to spare the all imported grip and hopefully help prevent a callus tear.
I think this is what you are asking!!!!
Cheers

I think he's referring to how much she twists throug the lower back when she snatches, so her torso is quite rotated and looks like it's almost on its side. Am I right Antoni?
You always want some twist in the torso as you swing through to take pressure off the lower back, the extent to which each person twists is going to be determined my body type etc I think. Fedorenko doesn't have an exaggerated twist, but still twists, you can see front on by the fact that his shoulders aren't horizontal as he swings though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaeVAszF7xM&feature=related

Emily you're close! I know about the back rotation thing but valery still snatches through the centre, watch how she & Ivan bounce their arm off the inner opposite thigh, haha not bouncing their snatch off their snatch;) and also look at how she turns her neck & is looking to the side as she does it. I'm just curios to know about that style vs wkc vs vasily/valentics styles pros, cons, etc...
In my opinion (for what its worth) i feel it is very easy to over analyse technique on these lifts
We're always looking to experts, we're always looking to emulate the technique of the expert when a lot of the time their particular technique may not suit us. I can think of at least one kettlebell "legend" who has adopted the technique of a truly world class lifter and it looks bloody awful because his genetics do not suit the style he has adopted and many of his reps are poor to boot
Of course some of the little techniques (like the corkscrew described by Mat or timing of hip flexion, extension etc) will be of great benefit but in general i think every lifter needs to find the most efficient technique to suit themselves. Every one at our club lifts differently because they all have different body shapes. We just try to find the most efficient, safest way for them to get the kettlebell from down there to up there whilst completing a legal rep
Im tired of being told to lift this way or that way because such and such does it
Just my .02
All the best in training

I agree, Jamie. With these lifts there are a few basic points that everyone should follow, and the rest will come down the individuals. It is easy to over analyse them and get overwhelmed trying to do every little thing that everyone tells you.

True. I'll try them all out & see that which suits best. I'm looking to the greats with a similar body type as the inspiration.
