These results ARE typical! Escalating Density Training (EDT) breaks all the rules for superior workout efficiency.

EDT creator and World-renowned sports performance specialist Charles Staley becomes your personal coach as he explains the principles and tactics of this intelligent approach to resistance training.

For the first time ever, Coach Charles Staley reveals why most people spend far too much time at the gym, and why they aren't experiencing the results they deserve.

A Complete Video Guide To Escalating Density Training

"Charles Staley's EDT is the most fool-proof method of building muscle I have ever come across. And it is not fake muscles of a pump artist; EDT muscles are as strong as they look."

- Pavel Tsatsouline, the author of 'Power to the People!' and 'The Russian Kettlebell Challenge'

Dear Friend,

Here's a dirty little secret that no one wants you to know, but I'll tell you anyway:

EVERYONE, at one point or another, feels confused about how to train.

Actually, 'confused' might be too tame a word. Perhaps 'exasperated' is a better term.

Whatever you want to call it, we've all felt it. In fact, I've experienced it myself, and (as I like to put it with my clients) it's 'not happy times.'

Let's face it — training is hard enough, without adding in the fact that you're not confident about your program. It just flat out sucks to slug it out at the gym 3-4 times a week, all the while wondering if your sweat and tears are going to lead to the body you're looking for.

"Charles, I have been using EDT for about a year. I have been very happy with my results. I am a hard gainer and have gone from 155 to 170 while only increasing body fat from 10% to 11%.

Now the good part: I just got your DVD and I can definitely say learning by example is the way to go. I have been trying to make the 5 reps as long as possible, watching the DVD cleared this area up. The first day of dropping to 4, 3, 2, then 1, my 'PR' jumped from 55 to 75, WOW. Needless to say I was sore, but it felt great. I love competing against myself, it keeps me going, and lets me know I am making progress, even on those hard days.

Thanks for the great system. And I would encourage anyone one using EDT to get the DVD— excellent work."

Dan Foster, San Antonio, TX

I'm sure you know what I'm taking about. But if you don't, you shouldn't read any further, because you should never change what's already working (my friend and colleague Dan John has a great quote about fixing things that aren't broken: 'That program worked so well, I stopped doing it!')

Still reading? Good — that means you're ready for a change. And you should congratulate yourself for having the smarts to fix what ISN'T working. Because too many of us struggle needlessly with training programs that simply don't deliver the goods. And let me state right here and now that it isn't your fault, it's the program's fault. A lot of my colleagues will chastise me for saying that, but I'm going to say it anyway, because it's true.

By the way, have you ever wondered why most training programs don't really work? I certainly have. And in my case, that 'wondering' gradually evolved into a lifetime worth of study and 'in the trenches' experimentation, both on myself and hundreds of clients, over a period of many years. The result of this fundamental dissatisfaction with the status quo is a system called Escalating Density Training, or EDT for short.

I first released the EDT system to the general public through an article I wrote for Testosterone magazine about 3 years ago. I wasn't sure how the article would be received because EDT is so incredibly simple, I thought most people might not grasp the significance of what I was offering.

Boy was I wrong!

That article created a firestorm of controversy and my e-mail inbox was almost immediately flooded with questions about my system. I couldn't have been more surprised to be honest with you. In fact, I really didn't think EDT would capture this type of attention, because frankly, EDT is so simple, it's actually difficult to convey the essence of it through the written word. And even if I COULD, people tend to think that 'simple' means 'simplistic.'

Which is a mistaken idea by the way… I recently watched a Discovery Channel special about the Apollo 11 moon landing, and one of the scientists was talking about how critical it was that the engine for the lunar lander (the one that would return the astronauts back to their space capsule) worked perfectly. After all, if it didn't, the Apollo astronauts would have never returned from the moon). Anyway, the scientist expressed their engineering philosophy by saying 'In rocketry, 'simple' means 'reliable."

In training, 'simple' means 'reliable' also! Now, EDT can be a 'tough sell' because it isn't very 'sexy' to some people. I mean, you've probably seen articles that feature these really cool looking programs that are detailed beyond imagination. All that detail leads you to believe that the program MUST work because so much thought and imagination went into it. As for me 'been there, done that.'

Unfortunately, those programs, as cool as they seemed, didn't do what I wanted them to do. And I'm impatient by the way— I'm not looking for a slight, barely noticeable change in my physique or performance over a 6-month period! I'm looking for BIG changes, and I don't want to have to rely on reincarnation to get them.

Are we on the same page here?!?!

All right, I don't want to beat this thing to death, but it's important that you understand where I'm coming from and the type of person EDT was designed for.

"Hello Charles, just got my copy of EDT on DVD and I have one word to describe it BRILLIANT!!! You are so right, the concepts are very simple and almost cause you to over-think them, yet there it is, easy to follow and very intuitive...thanks for a great product!!!! Thanks again for a training epiphany."

Chris Smith

Now if you're on board, if you 'get' what I'm talking about, and you're ready for a change, I've got great news for you. Ever since that first article, people have been hounding me to create a DVD on the Escalating Density Training system. At first I basically ignored all these requests, because again, I just thought the EDT system was so simple that there'd be no way I could actually produce a full length DVD on the subject.

But I did some thinking, and started going through all those questions that people had e-mailed to me, and eventually I came up with over 130 questions that (apparently) I hadn't managed to answer in any of my writings on the subject. And I felt like an idiot because suddenly it occurred to me that I had PLENTY of material for a DVD. So the decision was made.

But I didn't want this to be like everyone's else's videos. I didn't want this product to simply be a 4-hour lecture from yours truly. I wanted it to be not only instructional, but also dynamic and motivational to boot. Then it hit me: I'd call Tim Larkin. Tim (in addition to being the creator of the Target-Focus Training personal protection system) is a client/training partner/mentor of mine with a physique you'd disown your mother for, and fortunately for me, he credits his striking physical attributes (Tim's 6-1 and about 225 at 6% bodyfat!) to EDT.

Tim not only agreed to do the shoot with me, he was enthusiastic about the project, and as it turns out Tim actually agreed to perform one of the training sessions for the video, and that scene, trust me when I tell you, will get your attention in a BIG way.

"I just had to let someone connected with EDT know about the progress I have made using Mr. Staley's EDT program. I am a 43 year old physical education teacher and high school football coach. I have been lifting weights as a hobby for several years. I haven't made any real progress in years. I had come to the conclusion that I had reached my genetic potential and I could only maintain my current gains."

"I stumbled across Charles Staley's EDT program. I decided to give it a try. Now, at age 43, I am making gains in strength nearly every time I go to workout. The program is easy to follow and simply uses common since. Thanks so much for a program that has renewed my enthusiasm for lifting weights. EDT is the best program out today."

Cloy Ford, Conway, South Carolina

We flew Tim out to Arizona, we hired a great videographer, and got down to the business of creating a DVD that would not only answer every question you could ever have about EDT, it would also inspire and educate you about everything from training to goal-orientation, to correct exercise biomechanics, to effective journaling, and much, much more. We set out to make this DVD a complete guide to resistance training, and I'm happy to say that we succeeded.

"I gained 3/4 of an inch on my arms in a month, arms went from 16" to 16 & 3/4". I was also able to max curl and max tricep press about 20 lbs more after EDT. I could see results occur weekly, which was really motivating."

Kevin Grivois, Madawaska, ME

Here's a quick section-by-section list of just some of the jewels Charles shares on this DVD:

PART ONE: Introduction and Principles
  • Meet and listen to Tim Larkin, who was one of the first guinea pigs for EDT...hear it in his own words! Then watch Tim as he blasts through a dynamic PR Zone with a pair of kettlebells.
  • Learn the VERY surprising origins of EDT
  • It's not about high reps, it's about SMART reps (We'll explain)
  • Why everyone needs to employ the 'distraction principle.'
  • How EDT creates a specific purpose for each and every workout
  • Core Principle: Impose time limits for your workouts, THEN see how much you can get done (NOT vice versa)
  • Why the performance you achieve tells you EXACTLY what you need to do next workout.
  • Are the workouts too brief? Watch Tim Larkin and coach Troy Anderson performing their PR Zones and THEN decide.
  • Learn what density really means and how it relates to intensity and volume
  • Tim explains why EDT is a 'high concept.' I'm glad we brought Tim to the shoot because he has insights into the system that never even occurred to me!
  • People are using EDT everywhere you go— here's how to tell when you're watching EDT at a commercial gym.
  • EDT makes the trainer's job easier...all you have to do is what their biomechanics
  • Who was Dr. Sherrington and why do most people break his 'law.'
  • Why standard rep intervals will kill your efficiency (and your joints)
  • EDT defies your common sense...UNTIL you experience it
  • Discover the three essential categories of antagonistic pairings and how to use them to maximum effect
  • Abandon fixed loading parameters! I've written about this ad nauseum, but when you see it on tape, you'll finally 'get' it.
  • No more guesswork! If you screw up, the system will fix it.
  • Listen and watch as we distinguish the difference between 1RM's and 'momentary maximum strength.'
  • Don't take the knucklehead approach when you first try EDT! We demonstrate the right and wrong way.
  • If you don't beat your numbers, there is a formulaic prescription for what you should do next time...no other system does this
  • Cultivate your own 'competitive itch.'
  • Why people focus on pain, and why it's a BIG mistake
  • Once you make the switch from fatigue to performance, everything changes

PART TWO: A Look Under The Hood: PR Zone Demonstration
  • FINALLY -See What a PR zone should really look and feel like. This one section is worth the price of the DVD!
  • EDT with kettlebells? Yes— in fact we'll show you.
  • See how to do EDT with a fixed weight where your RM is more than 10
  • Learn how to pace your performance for maximum numbers in every PR Zone
  • Learn how to expertly manipulate rep-drops against the clock for maximum performance
  • Learn coach Staley's recommended method of notating your EDT workouts
  • Accurately gauge your working weights during the EDT warm-up process
  • The 4 functions of the EDT warm-up
  • Why TUT is an utter waste of time
  • Learn how many reps you should be getting in each PR Zone
  • How EDT corrects muscle imbalances in each PR Zone
  • Discover how to create exercise pairings for commercial gyms or high traffic areas
  • Learn how each PR Zone improves a range of fitness qualities simultaneously
  • Why it's OK to be Lazy — as long as you break your PR
  • Check out these EDT 'emergency procedures' for breaking your PR's when the going gets rough!
  • Misjudge your working weights? Here's how to fix it.

PART THREE: Troubleshooting and Special Applications

We took every conceivable problem you might possibly experience and fixed them, one by one. In this section:
  • Some meat head stole your station and won't get off the cell phone? We'll show you how to fix it
  • Find out how tension — not weight, leads to authentic gains
  • By the way, your instincts aren't always right— rely on cold, hard numbers instead. This DVD shows you how.
  • Why staying fresh — not tired— is critical for optimal gains
  • How EDT 'tunes you in' to 15 minute time frames
  • Why is a PR Zone 15 minutes anyway? Finally I tell all.
  • Learn how to adjust the EDT system to achieve your individual training goals
  • 'Finding the rhythm' during the 'break in' phase
  • Rack up the reps and rest — the superior rhythm for great EDT sessions
  • Discover the hidden connection between personal productivity principles and EDT
  • Fatigue management applies to your warm-ups too (we'll show you how)
  • Why EDT makes you work harder than the cruelest personal trainer ever would— any why you'll love it anyway
  • Tweaking EDT for maximum strength or strength-endurance applications
  • How long to rest between PR Zones
  • And much, much more...

Bonus! Essentials Of Weight Training Technique

I've been wanting to do a video on this topic for years, and we finally did it. This section is your one-stop, tell-all compendium of how to lift weights properly and safely (and you won't even need a protractor!) This section includes:

  • What 'good form' does and (more importantly) doesn't mean
  • How tension leads to greater safety
  • Grip and stance determine everything
  • The two twins of good form: symmetry and balance
  • My proactive approach to monitoring your technique. All successful athletes use it whether they know it or not.
  • Using neutral spine theory to keep your back happy even during the heaviest squat and deadlift sessions.
  • My 4 simple cues to a perfect squat every time
  • Limb length VS torso length: the essential formula for squat and pulling technique.
  • Using 'forefoot drag' to increase lunge intensity — ouch! (We love tricks like this!)
  • Do more with less, not less with more!
  • First ask 'why?'
  • Over-contraction for maximum lifting safety
  • How to optimize your technical rehearsal during the warm-up
  • Learn the 'economy walkout' for squats and set a new PR right away!
  • Learn why MACHINES are more dangerous than free weights despite what everyone else thinks
  • Make eye contact with others for safety
  • What a back hoe machine can teach you about bench pressing
  • Isolation or integration?
  • How shorter range of motion (not longer!) increases lifting efficiency and safety.
  • The breathing / stabilization connection
  • Locking out your joints versus slamming them shut
  • Making the best use of a trainer or coach...proximity bias
  • And much, much more...

Truth be told, there's just so much information and demonstration jammed onto the DVD that I can't even list all of it here online— this letter has gotten long enough already. The bottom line is this: if you're not happy with your current training program...if you're not getting the results you want...if you're spending too much time in the gym, EDT is your solution. And if you've already read about EDT but still have unanswered questions, this DVD will be an invaluable coach as we walk you through the EDT training system firsthand.
