Get Strong With an Old-School Barbell

We like our old-school exercise equipment. For starters they look great - no fluff or hype, just old-fashioned equipment that gets real results.

They're also adjustable. This means that you can gradually increase the load to sneak up on your personal best lifts. Simply add a few grams of iron shot to the barbell each week and you'll be able to reach your full potential.

And finally, our Old-School barbells and dumbells are unique. You can't get them anywhere else and they're sure to be a talking point in your home or gym.

If you want to stand out from the crowd and also mimic those strongmen from yesteryear, then add our Old-School barbells and dumbbells to your fitness equipment.

Old School barbells and dumbells

Here's what Australia's premier Kettlebell Instructor, Phil Kourbatski, has to say about the old school barbells:

If increasing forearm strength and gripping power, muscle size and strength is your goal there is nothing else out there that can deliver so many benefits as the old school barbells and dumbbells without specifically training for it.

It gave me a never experienced before growth –inducing stimulus from just doing simple movements like curls, rows, clean & presses, dumbbell swings.

My forearms felt ready to explode and my grip strength noticeably improved in just few sessions.

I am hooked. Training with the old school barbells and dumbbells is huge fun, extremely effective and makes you feel like you are training with strong people of the past, which has always fascinated me.

Some of the other advantages of the old school barbells and dumbell

  • <!--[if !supportLists]--> Due to the fact that the are shot loaded, you can use smaller increments in weights, which is huge advantage by itself, especially when it comes to maximal weights where 2.5 pounds increment can be too much ( as in a case of conventional barbell)
  • Because of the larger surface area, these bars are very comfortable, even for those with joint problems.
  • The tension generation from working with these bars is unprecedented. You work your forearms, fingers and wrists to a far greater degree than with conventional bar.

Kettlebells will make you the hero the of the beach. You know it. Other people might not.

The ambiguity ends with the Old School Barbell. Those tough sets of one arm snatches might have got you a strong back and some odd looks from vexed onlookers, but now they’ll really know what you’re all about before they flee in all directions.

In all seriousness the Old School Red, which I’ve only just last week got my hands on, has got a very appealing retro look and if you want you can take it out to the beach or the park and make like your shifting 70 odd kilos of solid iron with contemptuous ease ( I might just do that J. ) There are a couple of practical aspects you’ll want to consider if you’re thinking of getting one of these. The handle is 60 mm thick, making it one of the few ( if not only ) thick handled barbells on the market sold inside Australia that I’m aware of. As those who’ve done some thick bar work can attest your grip will be your biggest limitation at first with a bar handle this thick. If you’ve got small hands, it might be just a tad too thick for you - if you’ve never trained with thick bars before.

For those like me who’ve read Brooks Kubik’s work and are chiefly interested in using thick handled barbells for upper body training, the Old-School Red is a practical acquisition. Empty it weighs 26 kg and it can be shot loaded to 56 kg. I think this will be plenty for most guys. Of course if you can already strict curl a couple of plates on an Olympic bar then you might need to find something heavier than iron shot to fill it with.

The old shot loaded globe style barbells and dumbbells are something of an anachronism, having had their vogue more than a century ago. But there is an advantage over the plate-loaded bars we know and love. It’s the ability to increase the weight you’re lifting in very small increments by adding little bit of shot to each of the globes. Over time, your progress is surer, although significantly altering the weight of the barbell is obviously a lot more time consuming than with a plate loaded set. Since I bought this barbell for upper body work with a heavy accent on grip strength, I’m not going to go for very frequent increases ( certainly not more than once every few days or so ) and probably few if any decreases in weight, so for me it’s not an issue.

It’s cool.

You’ll want to lift it all the time.

If you’ve never got into thick bar work before, you will be into it.

Other people will covet your Old School Barbell.

Get it.

The thick bar is a big enough challenge , it will recruit all of the grip muscles every time to lift it - curl , press , row etc

The second challenge is that the balls do not spin on the bar - it is a one piece outfit. Again , you have to grip hard to mantain control!

Thirdly , shot moves around inside the bell (unless it is packed solid) and this will again put your stabilisers into some gnarly situations. That is good!

Quite unlike any piece of free weight equipment you have tried I would say.

And finally , as Myles says , "It's cool"!
