At last, the real secret to a strong and
powerful core without doing sit ups...

Listen up. This could be the most important message you'll hear if you want to get a strong, powerful and super lean core. If you're thinking six pack then we're on the same page. If you want to transform your torso, lose weight and build strength and power then you'll love what I've got next.

First things first. I've got to get something off my chest and it's a bit controversial. Here goes...

Traditional sit ups, crunches and Ab machines are out dated and not effective. If you want to develop a strong core, lose weight and develop a six pack they're a complete waste of time. To be brutally honest, sit ups (and all the hype and associated products that go with them) could be one of the biggest myths in fitness.

Mel Siff, world renowned sports scientist and consultant has this to say about the plethora of Ab machines,

"What about Ab machines? There are probably more machines on the market aimed at trimming and shaping the abdominal muscles than any other devices out there. Why? Well, the answer is quite simple - marketing and money! Nothing else"

But Dr. Siff is only warming up...

"The fact remains that no serious physique athlete or competitive body builder has ever relied solely on any form of ab machine to develop his/her exceptional abs"

If you want a six pack you're not going to get it doing sit ups. The bottom line is that the humble sit up and the machines that go with them only develop muscle endurance - something that most athletes don't really need in sport.  Your core muscles designed to prevent movement and stabilize the spine - this means that they need to be strong. Endurance is overrated.

So if you need to make a tackle, throw a punch or kick a ball muscle endurance is not going to help you. You need strength - not endurance.

Further, there is absolute no reason why abdominal training needs to be performed lying down. The flexion movement mimics NO regular activity (ok - maybe getting out of bed in the morning) so it's not a functional movement. Functional core exercises should be performed standing up. So feel free to give your ab machine the boot or throw it in the tip.

It's not just Dr. Siff who believes conventional wisdom pertaining to Ab training is no good. Our Russian friends, who have trained superior athletes that have trunk development and strength that most of us would die for, believe our Western wisdom is all wrong. They are laughing at us while we persist with fallacies and inferior training techniques.

Are you with me? Do you understand that conventional wisdom on ab exercise isn't that good and needs to be changed?

Good. Let's move on.

How to get a strong and stable core

Just so you're clear here's the main problem with conventional Ab exercises;
  • You will not lose weight or size from your mid-section.

  • Low intensity, high repetition Ab training (like doing 100 or 1000 sit ups) will only increase muscle endurance - not needed in most activities.

  • Worse still, doing 1000's of sit-ups is bad for your posture. Have you ever seen world famous golfer Gary Player? Great golfer - terrible posture.

  • The main function of the core is to stablize the spine - for this you need strength, not endurance.

  • Lying down is not necessary for Ab training

It was very clear to me that Ab machines and sit ups machines needed to be replaced with something more useful. I knew that deadlifts, squats, cleans, snatches and military pressing were great exercises but I wanted something different - an exercise that would be target the core muscles hard and effectively.

I searched the globe - there was mostly junk and gimmicks, but I eventually stumbled onto an old Russian exercise. The Full Contact Twist.

The FCT is a favourite exercise with our Russian comrades. Originally used by Eastern Bloc shot putters, it teaches you to transfer power from the ground up, through your legs into your core and out to the extremities. Most importantly it's a full body exercise that gives your core a super workout in a functional and effective way.

After some ingenuity, persistence and prototyping I have transformed the FCT exercise into an all in one super core training machine.

The Torsonator - is this the world's best functional core and Ab training device?

This machine is special . I think it ticks all the boxes if you want a strong and functional torso. It's brutally effective and fun to use - I can guarantee you haven't used anything quite like it.
  • Unstoppable rotational power - ideal for martial artists, footballers, golfers and nearly all sporting athletes.

  • Gives you a full body workout - talk about versatile, not only will your core muscles get nailed, you'll develop your arms, shoulders, legs, back, chest and grip simultaneously. It fair to say that all major muscles get a workout.

  • Trains you on your feet - this is the functional beauty of the Torsonator. This is one of the secrets to a functionally strong core.

  • You'll develop real world strength that will assist you in your sport and your skill set. You can't get this functionality with the sit-up or those over hyped Ab machines.

The Torsantor is your complete exercise tool for core strength and full body power. The Russians have been using this form of training for decades. One of the many reasons they've been able to humiliate us Westerners for so long.

Are you ready?

The humble sit up trains you to flex your spine. If you perform that movement over and over you're going to develop muscle endurance not strength- and poor posture for that matter. And don't think that sit-ups protect your back. This is another fallacy - if you want to protect your back, you need to exercise your back muscles (which you also do using the Torsonator).

Correct torso and core training targets the whole body (sorry for repeating myself but this is really important). This is what the Torsonator gives you. A complete workout that trains your core (torso) in harmony with your entire body. You'll get stronger, leaner and also develop the body in unison so you'll be less likely to get injured.

I have one and it is awesome. The movement is very smooth, the quality is excellent. Yes you could bang your barbell in the corner but I don't think it will be as good as using the torsonator.

I use it for all sorts of things not all of which are core based. I love front squats and ballistic push presses but you could do some seriously great complexes using the rows etc as well. I say good on you Rick, and to the nay sayers, don't knock it until you have tried it. It is great fun and it works.

This is a great product for a great price. The concept is not new. If you search the net for "landmine" or "commander", you'll see similar devices. However, this is the only Aussie version. Very solidly built and the price is very competitive.

Mine had a small manufacturing fault and Rick replaced it promptly. The workout I get from this device is awesome. Thanks for bringing out the Torsonator, Rick.

I have only had this for one day, but 25 clients have tried it already.

For a home gym, it is as versatile as a barbell. It offers a stack of exercises that are beneficial to a home gym. Most guys stop lifting at home because they get bored. To stop boredom, you need a stack of different equipment.

The Torsonator provides much needed variety to a home gym, without taking up any space. Its not a machine, it rotates 360 degrees, so you still need to balance it, it smashes the core like nothing else.

The 4 pronged one I have at PTC is a must have for any PT studio or commercial gym. The ability to provide a tough workout for 4 clients at once while using minimal equipment and space is reason enough to buy it.

Add the fact it is perfect for unilateral training and so many variations for pressing movents, and I regret the fact I didnt get one sooner.

The single best piece of equipment for a home gym after a BB and sandbag.

the latest toy at the Muscle Pit in Perth arrived this week, a double and single Torsonator from Rick.

I tried the single out tonight after benching and I'm hooked. I'd done this exercise before useing a bar in a corner and adding a slight bit of extra weight to the top end of the bar. I think pavel calls them full contact twists and Louie from westside has some other name I can't remember.

The issue with doing them with just a bar was finding a suitable corner to hold the bar into,
which was surprisingly hard in our gym so I didn't do them that often.
The Torsonator solved that, the platform is heavy enough to stick to the carpet and the bar holder thingy seems to swing in a smooth motion.

Then I added the handle thingy that came with the torsonator and that made the exercise at least twice as hard. 5 reps ( right then left =1 ) was enough for each set

Two thumbs up from me.

Generally I find the marketing of kettlebells and associated products extremely overhyped and gimmicky, but am happy to recommend this device for gyms and serious trainers.
I'll test the double out next week once Henry unpacks it
